Wellness class at Anderson Elementary is a big fan of the Walking Classroom! This is our third year using the program.
I teach nutrition, stress management, and social skills to every student of Anderson Elementary as part of physical education in Frisco Independent School District. Every student has my class once a week. I use The Walking Classroom with third through fifth graders.
As students walk into my classroom, I will often hear an enthusiastic voice ask, “Are we doing Walking Classroom today?” If my answer is, “not today,” the inevitable long drawn out “Awww!” follows.
My students love getting outdoors. If it is cold, we just bundle up. I find the pace of the walk is increased, and we gain greater fitness. With one of my classes recently, we spotted a woodpecker while on our walk! When it is raining, we look for paths indoors.
Students enjoy the lessons. This past year I made use of the slide decks in the adopter resources. Showing a few slides before our walk has added to the students’ understanding and retention!
We’ve really enjoyed great classroom discussions as result of The Walking Classroom. Specifically, the podcast on Patrick Henry (4-#49) and its focus on the dangers of smoking in the introduction fit in perfectly during our Red Ribbon Week! I am also looking forward to next week when we listen to the podcast about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (4-#64).
Here at Anderson Elementary, we are truly grateful for this curriculum that combines learning and fitness!
