As we near the end of the school year, I must say that I have truly enjoyed having The Walking Classroom in our daily routine. My students look forward to each day that they come in and see the WalkKits on their desks. I select podcasts based on topics in social studies or a particular skill in reading.
After my students learned how to operate the WalkKits and knew my expectations, we started having others walk with us. We invited students from other classes to join us on our walks. We even invited other school staff, such as our resource teacher and principal! These people had seen us out walking and had often asked about it.
On the day of our walk, those invited had to show up in time for the pre-walk discussion and to learn how to operate the WalkKit. I set expectations, and then we set out walking!
The students from other classes that joined us always left feeling really good about what they had heard and learned. The teachers that joined us were amazed! They marveled at how much we walked and they found the podcasts interesting. The information that the students could relate back after the podcast ended impressed them as well!
I’m looking forward to finishing this year and continuing next year with The Walking Classroom!
