I teach fourth grade students in an urban community just outside of Washington, DC. The students have been designated Gifted and Talented by way of assessment data, teacher recommendations, and parent surveys. However, our program is under-funded. The Walking Classroom has been an eye opener into how my students think and feel about the topics provided. It is a wonderful resource, allowing my diverse classroom, which is mostly boys, to walk outside and get fresh air in nature during instructional time.
For many of my students, recess and The Walking Classroom are their only opportunities to get outside while also getting in some healthy exercise time. The additional resources keep the students engaged. My students complete activities after they walk and listen to the podcasts. What is really rewarding is when students refer to a podcast in real life situations as a resource.
My students and I are so grateful for the Walking Classroom!
