The Walking Classroom was the perfect solution for getting my students up and moving, away from their computers during distance learning! I coordinated the podcasts with what we were learning in our curriculum. Students walked and listened during the asynchronous time.
They were always so excited to come onto Zoom the next day to discuss what they learned. The slide deck for each podcast was helpful to set the stage before listening, as well as for review after the walk. We recorded their learning onto Google Slide anchor charts and used the facts as review questions while playing Kahoot. The character and health lessons in each podcast also complemented our social emotional learning during class.
Once we returned to campus, The Walking Classroom was much looked forward to a couple times a week. Even with masks on, my kids loved being outdoors, walking and learning. I looked forward to our Walking Classroom time, too, because it assured that I would get in my steps!
My class was especially excited when our district superintendent came to visit, soon after our reopening. Several students described to him in detail, all about how moving our bodies makes us smarter, the importance of walking at a brisk pace, and the safety rules. They then showed our superintendent how to use the WalkKit. He came on our walk with us, one earbud in, walking and learning!
