MANCHESTER, TN — Active learning is happening at College Street Elementary and Westwood Elementary Schools – literally.
CSES’s Allison Beachboard’s third grade class and WES’s Kari Lawson’s fourth grade class are learning while moving, thanks to The Walking Classroom. Each student has a podcast on an MP3 player to listen to while on the move. On Wednesday, April 10, the two classrooms joined forces at WES and walked around the school together while listening to a podcast about the science behind tornadoes.
Lawson has been talking her lessons outside the classroom for four years now – her students will walk around the school and then finish the podcast on the track in front of WES. When it rains, they will make loops in the school hall.
“You hate to give up your classroom learning time, but kids need to be moving. This bridges both of those,” Lawson said.
