I had the opportunity to work with 36 campers at the Spectrum Connections Camp during the summer of 2017. Using The Walking Classroom was a great (and fun) experience for the campers! At first, they were reluctant about the program because they felt that the discussions after the walks would be difficult. They were concerned about remembering some of the details from the podcasts.
However, after the very first walk, they found that they enjoyed the follow-up discussion sessions. They were surprised that they actually retained a lot of information! The campers especially liked the health messages at the beginning of each podcast. Some favorite health message topics were nutrition and the connection between exercise and cognitive function. As far as the podcasts, they enjoyed the podcasts that featured historic figures, such as Benjamin Banneker and others.
Overall, this was a very positive experience for the campers. We are all looking forward to next summer!
