Once our Walking Classroom materials arrived, my goal was to train my six classes so that they would be ready to go for the start of the new school year in September of 2021. Well, the training went so well that students were begging for more!
Other classes heard about the WalkKits and asked if they could learn how to use them, too! Parents emailed me and asked for more information after hearing their kids rave about them! The Walking Classroom was very well received, and the excitement just keeps building this school year!
I use our WalkKits in our school’s STEAM program which meets once a week in each grade. I am able to collaborate with classroom teachers by sharing the extensive list of topics offered through The Walking Classroom’s podcasts. Classroom teachers tell me which lessons most closely match what they’re covering in class (for a variety of subject areas!). Then we use The Walking Classroom in our STEAM class.
Students have said they love the chance to be outside, enjoy nature, peruse the school grounds, and “be seen” by students working indoors looking out the windows! They also get so excited when it’s their turn to be one of the “pace cars” or the “caboose.” It’s a big responsibility!
The pre- and post-walking activities have been amazing, also. Each lesson has so many resources that are very easily shared with students. There are virtual field trips, word scrambles, quizzes, crossword puzzles, and online games. All the resources are right there (in the Adopter Resources!) and ready to use.
The Walking Classroom is so much so fun that I even had a fellow staff member borrow one to listen on his own time. His favorite was the “Who’s on First?”(5-#19, Complete-#122) podcast featuring the Abbott and Costello skit.
There are so many lessons to choose from, though, that it’s hard to pick a favorite until you get a chance to hear them all. The Walking Classroom is such a great experience!
