We make use of The Walking Classroom during our Summer Enrichment Camp. It serves as both a morning warm-up health exercise and literacy activity. First, campers engage in the walking and reading each morning. Then, they participate in activities related to the topics listened to during the walking period.
During that time, the youth campers have an opportunity to discuss the topics, offer their input, and develop projects related to some of the specific topics. They also have written assessments. These monitor how well they are listening and comprehending the information. The assessment results are used for ongoing planning for the camp’s literacy activities.
The Walking Classroom has truly impacted the literacy component of the Summer Camp. The students are more receptive to listening to the information as opposed to having to sit and read the information, then share what they have learned.
Our campers readily identify with the technology associated with The Walking Classroom. They consider it more of a recreational activity, rather than a warm-up healthy movement and literacy activity!
