We received The Walking Classroom at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year through a grant that was funded by bioMerieux Endowment Fund. I am the media coordinator and have the privilege of working with each student and staff member in our building. Therefore, I was excited to launch this program.
We started out slowly focusing on one classroom. The second grade teacher took on this program with me and the kids helped us create a walking path. They have now been on multiple walks using The Walking Classroom and get so excited about it each time. Just this week, we began The Walking Classroom with a third grade classroom. It has amazed me to see how attentive the students are to the podcast while they are walking.
In addition to the exercise that the kids are getting, this has been a great resource to build on the students’ listening comprehension skills. We have been able to gain data on how students improve by giving a pre- and post-assessment (prepared by staff at The Walking Classroom). While we don’t take this as a grade, we can gauge students’ listening comprehension skills at the launch of the program and assess it throughout as we progress with the program.
