Being hit with two catastrophic hurricanes back in 2017, our public school as well as our island remained in recovery mode for a long time. The Pearl B. Larsen School lost all of its technological equipment as a direct result of the storm. Then, thanks to a generous donor, the students received The Walking Classroom!.
The students had no previous exposure to this new form of technology, and it provided a way for them to get out of the classroom, and walk, listen and learn! They even got their own earbuds, which then went home with them in June.
From our very first lesson, my classes became totally engaged in the podcast, and this helped them retain the information. The students participated in think, pair, and share activities, as well as individual quizzes to check for mastery. They also served as my little helpers when distributing The Walking Classroom materials on a daily basis.
We are loving The Walking Classroom here in the Virgin Islands! Our island climate has the perfect year-round temperatures, so students will be able to get out more without sacrificing valuable instruction!
