My class and I took a “trip” with The Walking Classroom and did some exploring of our own! It was fantastic. We listened to the podcast on Christopher Columbus (5-#79) as we walked to a park located close to our school. Afterward, we discussed the impact Columbus had on the Native people.
Later, we extended the lesson by comparing the podcast to Encounter. A 32-page book written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by David Shannon, Encounter is told from a Native American’s point of view. The book provided a second narrative so that my students could hear a different perspective. It was a great way to provide them with access to the Native people’s story.
It was so nice to be outside and to be explorers while learning about explorers!
