Following the step-by-step introduction helped build our program participants’ excitement about The Walking Classroom. They couldn’t wait to get started!
Our program participants love to go outside, especially since they are able to walk around a nearby park where they normally don’t go. We started this program in the middle of winter and look forward to the spring and warmer weather to when they can sit in the park and discuss the podcast of the day.
By listening to the podcast a second time, they realize there is more information that they missed the first time. More deep questions are being brought up. This program is amazing! We are looking forward to hearing and discussing all the podcasts.
Here is some feedback from one of the recreation leaders:
“Students listened to Maya Angelou (4-#17, Complete-#37) and learned about her experiences, her life and what an honor it was to be the first woman and first African American to speak at a presidential inauguration. They had many questions, as they didn’t understand at first why it was hard growing up in the south in the 1930s and 1940s. Then they listened to the podcast the second time and caught onto segregation. We had a good discussion after that podcast.
Another good discussion was about hard work and perseverance after listening to John Henry (4-#63, Complete-#40). The students shared what they knew about the story that wasn’t in the podcast. They also brought up the moral of the story and how handmade things can be best, and discussed sacrifice and how John Henry was a real person, but that his story might have been a little exaggerated because of what an amazing person he was.”
The kids LOVE this program! In the follow-up discussions, it’s amazing how the kids will speak up and have such smart conversations. They can’t wait for what podcast will be next. Thank you for this program!
