When I found out that our school was going to be adding extra recesses this year as a part of a special pilot program, honestly I was a bit scared. While I agree that exercise and movement is important for active children, we had academic goals to meet in a limited time frame. How could we still continue to engage their minds as well as their bodies?
Then I found out that we’d been selected to participate in The Walking Classroom. What a gift it’s been! With The Walking Classroom, I’ve never had any trouble finding topics that coordinate with my lessons for the week. The podcasts really meet and extend the standards.
Students rushed home to share information about the WalkKits with their friends and families. What a great way to promote positive growth! Students who may have otherwise preferred a more lethargic approach at the devoted physical activity time can now engage in something quite the opposite.
The Walking Classroom has also adapted wonderfully to the indoor setting. I get most excited when I hear the students discussing topics from the podcasts amongst their friends. They’ve been able to make powerful connections as they build background knowledge in this fun way. We’re proud to be among the adopters of the Walking Classroom!
