My class is beyond thrilled when a Walking Classroom podcast is scheduled. They know the routine! First, we build background knowledge and meet vocabulary via a brief Powerpoint. Then, the students are responsible for independently completing a first listen of the podcast at some point during the week.
Friday is walk day — weather permitting (although we have already had one indoor walk due to inclement weather!). We take our walk, often with a guest visitor. Having a guest visitor increases the students’ motivation. We have even had the superintendent walk with us!
Right when we come back, we take a Kahoot! quiz to ensure students retain the major concepts learned in the podcast. The following day or a few days later, I give a formal quiz on paper to assess learning.
The Walking Classroom has been a huge benefit to our class, supplementing all areas of learning and increasing motivation. As an educator, I am excited to continue to develop how I incorporate The Walking Classroom into our daily routines!
