The story I would like to share with you this year is a story of triumph. With COVID affecting our world beginning in March of 2020, our 21st CCLC program still had to find a way to tutor and work with students. We sent home Walking Classroom WalkKits and earbuds with each of our students in the fourth and fifth grade. The students and parents both signed a contract agreeing to return the items back to school by the end of the year.
We assigned the students a podcast to listen to while exercising or walking at their homes. Students listened to the podcast twice. They listened first before they logged on virtually with their classroom teachers. Then, they listened again at the end of the day, before they logged on with their afterschool teachers. The teachers reviewed the podcast, asked questions, and students participated in the extension activities. Of course when surveyed, the extension activities were the students’ favorite part!
Our students and teachers have worked hard to overcome the trials of the pandemic. With the learning loss that every student and school has experienced, we consider ourselves both lucky and blessed to have The Walking Classroom. It is a resource that students not only need for learning, but also love to use while they are learning.
